Duke Ellington a été précurseur dans de nombreux domaines, il a collaboré avec tous les arts (poésie, littérature, danse, théâtre) et ses œuvres ont traversé l’industrie du disque, la radio, la télévision et le cinéma. Il apparaît dans des films en jouant son propre rôle : Black and Tan Fantasy, Symphony in Black… Sur une idée d’Orson Wells, il a créé un show spécifique pour la télévision en 1957 : A Drum is a Woman. Le film « Anatomy of a Murder » d’Otto Preminger est un chef d’œuvre dans lequel la musique d’Ellington joue un rôle crucial. Leïla Olivesi, spécialiste d’Ellington, pianiste et compositrice, invite à plonger dans la genèse du film et de la musique composée en collaboration avec son alter ego Billy Strayhorn.

Duke Ellington was a pioneer in many fields, he collaborated with all arts (poetry, literature, dance, theater) and his works crossed the music industry, radio, television and cinema. He appears in  films playing his own role: Black and Tan Fantasy, Symphony in Black… On an idea by Orson Wells, he created a specific show for television in 1957: A Drum is a Woman. Otto Preminger’s film « Anatomy of a Murder » is a masterpiece in which Ellington’s music plays a crucial role. Leïla Olivesi, Ellington’s expert, pianist and composer, invites us to explore the genesis of the film and the music composed in collaboration with his alter ego Billy Strayhorn.
