Entre décembre 1950 et juillet 1961 le Duke n’enregistrera pas moins de 19 albums, que l’on peut qualifier de « concepts ». Pratiquement tous enregistrés dans les studios Columbia de New-York, exceptionnellement à Los Angeles, et produits par Irving Townsend, musicien amateur mais producteur de talent et en qui le Duke avait une grande  confiance.Presque deux albums par an ! En plus des tournées, des concerts, des voyages incessants…
Ces enregistrements sont remarquables par leur homogénéité, l’intelligence et souvent l’audace de la conception, par la variété des atmosphères et, bien sûr, par l’exceptionnelle qualité des orchestrations. Orchestrations qui doivent beaucoup aussi à Billy Strayhorn.
Parcourir dans le temps limité d’une conférence cette partie fascinante de l’œuvre ellingtonienne est un peu une gageure. On voudrait tout retenir mais il faut choisir dans ce foisonnement ! En souhaitant simplement donner à chacun l’envie de réécouter ces chefs-d’œuvre qui n’ont pas pris une ride…

Between December 1950 and July 1961, the Duke recorded no less than 19 albums, which could be described as « concept » albums. Virtually all of them were recorded in Columbia Studios in New York, and exceptionally in Los Angeles, and produced by Irving Townsend, an amateur musician but a talented producer in whom the Duke had great confidence.
Almost two albums a year! In addition to tours, concerts and constant travelling…
These recordings are remarkable for their homogeneity, the intelligence and often audacity of their conception, the variety of atmospheres and, of course, the exceptional quality of the orchestrations. Orchestrations that also owe a great deal to Billy Strayhorn.
To cover this fascinating part of Ellington’s oeuvre in the limited time of a conference something of a challenge. We’d like to remember everything, but we had to choose from the abundance! We simply hope to inspire everyone to listen again to these still fresh masterpieces
